The Biography of the English Benedictines includes 885 monks who died between Feckenham (1585) and President Barber (1850), about 400,000 words: this was published in 1999. The whole collection (MS at Ampleforth) consists of 13 volumes with over 7000 pages. The main sources were Weldon, letters and the Provincial account books. A copy was made for Downside, later because it includes some revisions. His entire work is also available in a number of libraries in microfiche (1979), but the master film has been lost. See Obituary material for details of his life and character.

Sigebert BUCKLEY   308   Baptised: Robert   House: L   Born: 1520   Died: 22 Feb 1610,  aged: 90.2   at Wendling
Professed: 1558      Ordained: 5 Jun 1558
Notes: 'Robert Seabert' in Westminster Mun. 9327 (dates profession by Dec 1557, & gives ordination date). Baker (in 1635) says he died 1608, but Maihew & al. give 1610: if as thought then about 90, birth would be 1520+. On 21 Nov 1607 he aggregated to the Congregation two of the Cassinese (monks from Italy), Vincent Sadler & Edward Maihew, but no others, and professed no one, though Maihew says he made his profession earlier the same day. These two subsequently aggregated others; Baker (who seems to have been the first) says he 'made a transition'. Maihew (Trophaea 2.377) says that they did not realise the significance of 21 November (anniversary of restoration of Westminster in 1556) until afterwards. For documents and detail see D.Hugh Connolly in Downside Review 30 (1931) 49-74.

Notes: He was sent to Italy by Prior Cockshoot in order to study theology (1845-48: the year of revolutions compelled his return): and he actually did so under Abbot Bianchi in Parma, who was one of the earliest of (modern) Thomists. His companion was Br Laurence Shepherd. It is clear from the stories in his obituary notices (q.v.) that he became a very able student and teacher. A large number of his books remaining in the archives at Ampleforth (125) illustrate the same point.

Cathedral Prior of Winchester 1878, Abbot of York 1883. "His long residence and zealous labours in Workington had earned him the respect, not only of his own flock, but of all the townsfolk and indeed of West Cumberland generally. He held, in fact, a position of exceptional influence and authority and as 'Abbot Clifton' dominated the local scene. When his Requiem came to be sung by Prior Burge, the spacious church was quite unable to accommodate the crowds who desired to attend." (McCann, obit.notes)

Missions: Brandsby 1791 – Craike and Oulston 1794 –
Notes: Not very good at accounts (they 'did not give satisfaction at chapter in 1789' Allanson B312). Was pushed out of the Brandsby mission to make room for a French teacher priest, hence took on Oulston-Crayke-Angram when the priest (were Franciscan) at Osmotherley ceased to serve Angram: the Fauconberg agent would not allow him to live on the estate but when Ld Fauconberg (executor for Ann Fairfax of Gilling 1793) died in 1809 his sister inherited and made a fund to support the priest. This mission developed into Easingwold. Fr Jerome was the first to be buried at Ampleforth.

Notes: Birth is from Birt p122: Allanson says 1732 (B251).Professed by 1749 Chapter: taught philosophy, but spent 24 years as a Prior. Bishop Walmesley made him first choice as coadjutor, but references were delayed, and Sharrock got the job instead (Allanson). Acted as President while Walker was in prison, then elected 1794. Started school at Vernon Hall, Liverpool, which Marsh took on; it lasted till 1806 at Parbold. No Vernon Hall pupil's name appears in Ampleforth list. Did little on visitation at Lamspringe 1797, and was weak in the case of Cuthbert Wilks (Allanson)

He made great efforts to get into touch with Father Anselm Robertson, the last surviving monk of the Scottish Benedictine Congregation; and the romantic idea of emulating in Scotland the story of the preservation of the English Congregation by Dom Sigebert Buckley of Westminster appealed strongly to DD. As his disorder required constant attention and great repose he was allowed by his superiors to reside with his parents, whose devotion and attention to his wants through all those years have never flagged. He did not himself give up the hope of recovering his health and of returning to his work, and even when years of sickness had ruined his constitution he regarded daily attendance at Holy Mass and Holy Communion, with constant visits to the Blessed Sacrament, as the irreducible minimum of his religious life." Notes: A very cheerful, 'clubbable' man. Of his school days, a contemporary wrote that he 'took his religion very seriously indeed. But it was about the only thing he did take seriously', and '...games: he did not shirk them, but he had more vigour than skill. . . He was most strict in his observance of rules - bar that of silence'. (Obituary: a very similar obituary in Almanack (1925 p24) is signed T.A.B[urge].

Notes: Professed under age by mistake: 1615 is second attempt. Studied at St Edmunds. Mission to Bursfeld Cong in Germany 1631-33. Was appointed Abbot of Lamspringe by Pope on recommendation of Abbot-Elect Wilfrid Selby, unanimously confirmed by community (Allanson B97, quoting Townson 154, 205). Chapter 1653 confirmed Abp Cologne's condition of life abbacy. As Abbot he left much of the work to Joseph Sherwood. "For mnay years there were only a few students", but under him (& Sherwood) there were 20 by 1668. Most returned to England or went to Josephinum (SJ) in Hildesheim after military occupation of 1672 (Alanson B98). Gave a home to his brother Sir Thomas after Oates plot: both are buried in the nave.

Benedict GLOVER   886   Baptised: Edward   House: L   Born: 4 Mar 1787   in Prescot, Lancs   Died: 14 May 1834,  aged: 47.2   at Crosby
Professed: 8 Jun 1804      Ordained: 6 Feb 1811      Educ: Lamspringe    Office: Prior 1818 but declined
Missions: St Mary's Liverpool 1814 – Crosby 1819 –
Notes: Buried at Seel Steet, Liverpool: reburied at Ampleforth July 2004. A good classical scholar, but a creature of impulse (Allanson B332). Elected Prior at Chapter 1818 but declined (thus letting in Laurence Burgess, whom he supported whatever he did). Was a supporter of Baines and his schemes: went to Rome with him 1826. But he switched to opposition when the Baines-Burgess 'conspiracy exploded' (B333). Was appointed Superior until Towers could arrive (1830): "It requires a stouter heart than I possess to bear up against such evils." (Glover to Birdsall 30.4.1830, in B334) He was considered (but not for long) as Vicar Apostolic in Calcutta. He regretted his part in the troubles, but made them worse by burning all his files. Published 2 books (B334)

Notes: Birt says born Hindley, but this is deleted in Downside copy of Birt p.142. Allanson gives him 13 pages (B363-76). He was Prior of Dieulouard (the last) aged 27, and led the community through the escape and wanderings following the French revolution. He was recalled to be second Prior of Ampleforth in 1806, where he began adding buildings, and had much to do with attempts to recover EBC property in France after 1815. He refounded St Edmund's in Douai almost single-handed, and was twice President. Though resourceful and effective as Prior, he was criticised for his handling of financial matters in later life. Many letters survive, and his two short autobiographical accounts are memorable, Fr Marsh's Escape from Dieulouard (1994) & Reminiscences (1995).

Notes: A somewhat shy man, he was at home in cottage and in castle: academic life was no distraction to him. For 47 years Hon. Secretary of the Ampleforth College Beagles, he became the longest serving hunt secretary in the whole of the British Isles. As a housemaster for 32 years his quiet methods had far-reaching effects: the huge congregation at his funeral was a wonderful tribute.

Notes: A novice at Lamspringe, he was professed secretly (Birdsall says 4 am, for the Prussians had forbidden any more vows), and explicitly (Birdsall Diary & Allanson, who knew them all) for Ampleforth (then in the making). He left 12 Sep 1801, but returned on 29 Dec. See Cramer, Lamspringe: an English Abbey in Germany p145. It was he who brought the school over to Ampleforth.
Rishton founded the Workington mission (1810). He was Prior (Ampleforth) 1814, helped at the renewed St Edmund's at Douai, and became Vicar General in South Africa till deranged, when he returned to Ampleforth 'quite helpless'. He had complicated things by two attempts at the same marriage.(Allanson B335-6)

Anselm WILLIAMS   2361   Baptised: Thomas   House: L      Died: 8 Jan 1636   at S Miel, Lorraine   cause Hanged   Buried at: Dieulouard
Professed: 1623
Notes: Some regard him (and Br Leander Neville, his companion) as a martyr. They were apparently returning from a sick call when Saxon troops seized and hung them, 'in their habits'. The villagers erected a memorial cross, but it was destroyed when a tree fell on it about 1900. There was evidently a folk-memory associated with the site, for it was here that a statue of Our Lady was put up to commemorate Dieulouard's escape from destruction on 8 September 1944, and the base of the seventeenth century cross is still visible. The site is on the edge of what was once one of our woods, above the village of Belleville (red cross on the map), about two miles south of Dieulouard itself. Abbot Byrne wrote of him, 'He did a really vast quantity of work in the archives of his house, arranging great masses of letters and documents into volumes and files', and (very gently) 'He had not a little of that level of copiosity which tends to paralyse the hearer's attention - so also, in the social intercourse of everyday life, at least in his later years. His retentive memory superabounded in detail, and (with Herodotus) he had a gift for digressions.' (Obituary)

Notes: Besides English, Fr. Romuald taught German, Italian and Spanish. He was at Belmont over forty years, 1869-1907: he was also the life of the community in recreation time. He had no end of stories. He shrank from responsibility; and though once, if not twice, elected Prior of Ampleforth, he refused to accept the dignity. He was said to be unique, having been a Conventual all his long monastic life of fifty-six years. (Whittle AJ 13:3 (1908) 356)
